Design Systems for Small Teams

Design systems have a reputation problem: they sound like something only large companies can afford. In practice, small teams benefit most from the simplest version of one.
Start with the decisions you keep re-making: type scale, spacing, colors, button styles, and form patterns. Document them once, use them everywhere.
The point isn’t uniformity for its own sake — it’s speed. When routine decisions are already made, your team spends its energy on the parts of the work that actually need judgment.
Keep the system small enough to stay true. A page of rules everyone follows beats a manual nobody opens.
