Redesign or Rebuild? How to Know Which You Need

Redesign and rebuild sound interchangeable, but they solve different problems. A redesign changes how things look and feel. A rebuild changes how things work underneath.

If your content structure, user flows, and technical foundation are sound — and the gaps are visual and editorial — a redesign usually wins. It’s faster, cheaper, and lower risk.

A rebuild earns its cost when the foundation itself is the constraint: pages that can’t be extended, a CMS no one can use, performance you can’t fix, or product direction the current stack can’t support.

Before committing to either, write down what “done” looks like in outcomes, not deliverables. If the list is mostly cosmetic, redesign. If it’s structural, rebuild.
